Myth about time for Perparation.

There exist a gross misunderstanding about the time it takes for preparation. Time for preparation is a personal thing. I have my room mate who had prepared in 25 days and got AIR 62 where as other people had an year or two years coaching and they also ended up at the same place so its more personal.
Several Reasons for this difference.
1) Preparation during college exams:- If you have prepared very well during your college exams it becomes very easy for you to refresh it and you can prepare early. As was the case with my room mate who was the class topper and had his basic worked out very well.
2) Level of understanding:- Some people read things and they understand it in first go while others need to give it enough time before they can assimilate it and understand it. Well that's up to to everyone and that's one of the reason that people take time.
3) The extent of the course you are aiming at:- Well its quite evident that selective study is the way to go, you need to choose the syllabus you are going to give your full energy on. Cause its but natural that even if you have one complete year you wont be able to finish course if you are trying to go in utter depth and trying to do everything so that's one more factor.
4) Confidence in the level of preparedness:- Some people are confident on whatever they have prepared and need not to go through it again and again. While other need to go back and keep looking at it so they take time, this factor is also quite personal.

Well these are few factor which determine how much time you would take for preparation. So its up to you.

And on a lighter note all of us are Engineers and we are famous for doing things in whatever time frame we decide so its not difficult.

  3. i have a doubt.
what's the difference between M.S. in india(I.I.T) and abroad?
most of my friends are going to write gre and pursue M.S abroad. when i ask them why they r not going to write gate they say that M.S in india is inferior to M.S abroad. moreover they say that M.s in I.I.T also does not have the same value as those abroad. though i know the real reason is that they r lazy to study for gate. but being a gate aspirant i feel a bit dejected every time i hear them say. moreover my maths professor once remarked the same thing and said M.s abroad will be of more value and we'll gain more knowledge.on the other hand my senior said that his cousin who did M.S in cambridge(or some other univ in U.S) is still searching for job so it's not worth the huge money spent and i'll be well off doing ms in iit than in any of the top foreign universities. So what's your standd. please help me come out of this confusion.

  4. For the first question M.S in U.S is comparable to M.Tech in India. M.S course India is more research oriented as per what i know and mainly the pursuant of those course opt for Phd. Well M.Tech course in India is not inferior anyway but only problem being the resources that we have only in IIT's are available there in many medium level college's so the quality of education might be considered good. Secondly you need not to feel inferior if you are aiming for IIT cause only 1 or 2% out of those who write GATE get into IIT while alteast 5 out of 10 opting for foreign universities go there so in a way you are having a healthy environment around you. By no way i am demeaning the people going abroad but thats the level of competition for getting into IIT's. Also you if you are doing your M.Tech from IIT you are doing it from best institutes in country, while if you want top 10 college's of U.S you need to pay healthy amount of money which might or might bot be possible to everyone. But still i would say in the end keep your option's open do not think that you don't want to go abroad cause getting into IIT though not difficult is not always certain so play cool exercise all your options and also keep in touch with those who are planning to go abroad. I think this might help any more queries?

  5. thanks
i'm confident that i'll clear gate if not this year certainly next year since there's ample time for me to study. but anyway i'll see my performance this year and give a shot at gre next year if gate2010 was miserable.

  6. Why not this year?
    It's never too late.
It's just the beginning of October, try your best and getting into IIT in your desired stream is no tough job, if you put in sincere attempts.
